The ring final circuit is uniquely British. While highly efficient at distributing 32 A load across 2.5 mm² twin-and-earth cables, it requires precise dead testing to prove that the loop is continuous and free from bridged connections, spurs, or reversed polarities.
The Three-Step Ring Continuity Procedure
Before energising a ring circuit, the standard sequence under IET Guidance Note 3 must be completed with the circuit isolated at the distribution board:
Step 1: End-to-End Resistance Measurement
Separate the incoming and outgoing legs of the ring at the consumer unit. Measure end-to-end loop resistance:
- Line Loop (r1): Measure between the two Line conductors.
- Neutral Loop (rn): Measure between the two Neutral conductors (should equal $r_1$ within 0.05 Ω).
- CPC Loop (r2): Measure between the two Circuit Protective Conductors.
Theoretical Ratio: For standard 2.5/1.5 mm² twin-and-earth cable, the ratio of $r_2 / r_1$ should be approximately 1.67 ($2.5 / 1.5 = 1.67$). If $r_2 approx r_1$, someone has wired the ring in singles or parallel CPCs.
Step 2: Line-to-Neutral Figure-of-Eight Test
Cross-connect the incoming Line to the outgoing Neutral, and the outgoing Line to the incoming Neutral. Test across Line and Neutral at every single socket-outlet on the ring:
- Expected Reading: The measured resistance at every socket should be identical and equal to (r1 + rn) / 4.
- Spur Identification: Any non-fused spur will show a slightly higher reading corresponding to the length of the spur cable.
- Bridged Ring Fault: If socket readings vary significantly, the ring has an intermediate bridge (interconnection) between legs.
Step 3: Line-to-CPC Figure-of-Eight Test (R1 + R2)
Cross-connect incoming Line to outgoing CPC, and outgoing Line to incoming CPC. Test across Line and Earth at every socket-outlet:
- Expected Reading: The resistance at every socket should be constant and equal to (r1 + r2) / 4.
- Recording: The highest reading obtained on this test is recorded directly on the schedule of test results as $(R_1 + R_2)$ for the circuit.
- Polarity Verification: This test simultaneously confirms correct polarity at every socket.
Common Ring Faults & Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting Diagnostics:
• Open Circuit on one leg: Resistance reads open loop (> 2000 Ω). Trace each socket in sequence to find the loose screw terminal.
• Bridged Ring: Resistance varies across sockets. Disconnect sockets in halves to isolate the unintended loop bridge.
• Reversed L-CPC: Step 3 produces unexpected zero reading or meter fault.
